Daleks ET 2.0
Summer 1997

Welcome to the 2.0 release of Daleks ET. See the Version History for the new improvements.

This is a simple implementation of Daleks, a old game first written (as far as I know) by John and Walter Wu (although I didn't use any of their source code). You are being chased around by very stupid robots who want to kill you for some strange reason. (You probably forgot to back up their memory cores last night, didn't you? How inconsiderate! [Later note: as someone wrote in to tell me, this is actually based on Dr. Who, a show I've never had the chance to watch :( ]) Fortunately, these robots are complete idiots. They always head straight for you, and with a little strategy, you can cause them to crash into each other, turning expenisive machinery into piles of rubble. (always a good time!)

The other way you can disable the robots is to use your (*insert trumpet heralding here*) SONIC SCREWDRIVER! This incredible technological achievement will disintegrate all of the robots within a 1 block radius of you. Unfortunately, you only get one of these per level. (Although, in my implementation, you get to save unused screwdrivers from level to level... aren't I a nice guy?)

The final advantage you have over the robots is your personal emergency transporter. If you get cornered or trapped, activate this, and you'll pop up somewhere else. Unfortunately, the location where you will appear is random, so you very well could be jumping from the pot into the fire. You have as many teleports as you want.

That's it! (it's a simple game)

Why did I write this:
I'm going to the PA Governor's School this summer, and they are going to be teaching me a lot of stuff there about artificial intelligence, so I figured I'd better brush up on my programming.

I know, I know, there isn't any real AI in this game... yet. I just finished the actual game itself, and so I figured I'd upload it real quick while I was working on an AI replacement for the player. There isn't much point to this really, I'm just exercising my programming skills & learning some AI theory ahead of time.

Version 3.0 will include the AI.

The readme file has the controls listed.

Requirements:
I think anything with a 640x480 screen will do fine, but I could be wrong. Just try it and find out.

Freeware or Shareware:
If you've ever written any shareware or freeware software for the Mac community, this is free. I've used a lot of shareware that I never paid for (I'm an unemployed high school Junior, what do you expect?), so this is the best payback I can muster for now. (along with any other software I write in the near future)
However, if you've never contributed anything to the Mac community, and this is your most favorite game in the whole world, just give me something in return. A buck or two would be really cool, but I'll take whatever you think it's worth (email a really funny joke or some pick up lines maybe?)
I'm also looking for some sounds to spice it up, check the version history for details.

Disclaimer:
I take no responsibility for this software whatsoever. Use it at your own risk. However, if it makes you feel any better, this software doesn't mess with your hard drive or OS, so I don't see how it could mess anything up. If it causes crashes or things start behaving funny after you have run it, write me and I'll try to help. Write me if it crashes in any case, because I think this is completely stable.

I give permission for this package to be distributed in any way, as long as the distributer is not making any profit off of it, and as long as I am given credit for this application. Contact me otherwise.
